Ultra-Deep Vertical Shaft Slurry Transport – Shengli Tunnel, Tianshan Mountains (Xinjiang, China)
Project Overview: Excavating a 707 m Ultra-Deep Ventilation Shaft
The Shengli Tunnel is a major mountain highway tunnel crossing the Tianshan Mountains, with a total length of 22.1 km, currently holding the record as the longest highway tunnel in the world.
The project involved the excavation of an ultra-deep ventilation shaft (No. 2 shaft) to a depth of 707 m and an internal diameter of 11.4 m, setting world records in vertical shaft depth, diameter, and construction elevation.
Construction utilized China’s first self-developed brace-type vertical shaft boring machine, a fully mechanized system integrating excavation, muck discharge, and support installation. In the following text, this machine will be referred to simply as the shaft boring machine أو excavation machine.

The vertical shaft presented extreme geological and operational conditions:
- Maximum burial depth: 1,112 m
- High in-situ stress and groundwater pressure
- Environmental conditions: Low temperature, low air pressure, and low oxygen content
- High seismic intensity and strict environmental protection requirements
Operational requirements:
- Continuous upward transport of high-density, high-solids slurry and excavated material over 700+ m vertical distance
- Pumping system reliability under high head, high solids concentration, and continuous duty conditions
Stable flow delivery with minimal maintenance interruptions to avoid halting mechanized excavation
Kingda 200QDPH High-Pressure Slurry Pump

Kingda 200QDPH Gravel Pump was selected for the vertical muck discharge system.
Key design considerations:
- Hydraulic performance: Maintains stable flow under high solids concentration and variable slurry density
- Mechanical robustness: Reinforced pump body, heavy-duty shaft and bearing assembly to sustain continuous high-pressure operation
- مقاومة التآكل: Optimized impeller and volute design to handle abrasive, high-density muck without accelerated wear
Integration:
- Pump installed as part of the vertical discharge system of the shaft boring machine
- Handled slurry from the excavation face, lifting it continuously to the surface
- Operated reliably under high pressure (~8 bar per pump) and ultra-deep conditions
Project Results: Reliable, Continuous Operation
- Stable muck discharge maintained throughout the 707 m shaft excavation
- التشغيل المستمر of the excavation machine ensured without unplanned interruptions
- Reduced wear and maintenance requirements for the pump system under extreme depth and abrasive slurry conditions
- Enhanced operational safety due to reliable slurry transport under high-stress geological environments
The solution enabled uninterrupted mechanized vertical shaft construction, supporting record-setting excavation performance and minimizing downtime in ultra-deep shaft conditions.

Engineer Commentary: Insights from the Field
“For ultra-deep vertical shaft projects, proper pump selection and system integration are critical. Our 200QDPH slurry pumps maintained stable discharge under high-solids, high-abrasion conditions, reducing wear and maintenance frequency.
Mechanized excavation efficiency is greatly improved when slurry transport systems are engineered specifically for extreme depths and challenging geology.
This project highlights the importance of dedicated high-pressure slurry pump design in supporting safe, continuous operation in deep mountain shaft construction.”
